Take Augmentin exactly as your doctor has told you. Your doctor or pharmacist has weighed the risks and benefits of taking it the past few months.

The recommended dose is one tablet taken each day. You may take the tablet twice a day. Do not drink plenty of water or take it for more than 3 days without drinking a glass of water, as this may reduce the effectiveness of Augmentin.

Before eating or drinking grapefruit or grapefruit juice, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using any of the medicines listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using Augmentin.

Talk to your doctor if you are using any of the following:

• an antibiotic called cephalexin which is used to treat infections in your stomach and intestines.
• an anti-inflammatory medicine called cyclosporine which is used to treat streptococcal pharyngitis (in children aged 6 months and above).
• cimetidine which is used to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers.
• cisapride which is used for severe skin infections and for which you have to pay more for the medicine. It can be expensive.
• carbamazepine which is used to treat high blood pressure and for which it is very important to take Augmentin. It is much cheaper than other medicines, and there is no generic available at the moment.
• cisapride which is used for severe skin infections (infection of the skin with the virus which causes cold sores).
• cisapride which is used for severe infections of the lungs, nose, airways or genitals, which you may have to pay more for the medicine. You must tell your doctor if you have a history of cold sores or a family history of cold sores.
• chlorpropamide which is used for treating cough.
• ketoconazole which is used for treating skin infections.
• methoxyflurane which is used for treating viral infections of the mouth or nose (pseudomembranous prostheses).
• medicines called antifungals which are used to treat infections which are caused by bacteria such as Candida.
• medicines called anti-emetics which are used to treat breathing problems (epilepsy).
• methoxyflurane which is used for treating breathing problems (epilepsy).
• medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which are used for pain relief.
• medicines known as immunosuppressants which are used for treating diseases of the skin, such as allo-sudy (for an organ which has an immune system), to stop the immune system from attacking the infection.
